My Love, She Comes in Colors

Apparently, wines taste better when sipped under red or blue lights. Green and white lights?  Not so good.

Much Ado About Something

“The market for wine-bottle closures is a $4 billion battlefield where an epic confrontation is now taking place.” - George Taber, from To Cork or Not To Cork: Tradition, Romance, Science, and the Battle for the Wine Bottle

The much-needed discussion about wine closures is upon us and none other than George M. Taber is taking the podium.  Former reporter and editor of Time Magazine, Taber is no stranger to wine. His earlier book Judgement in Paris captured the moment when California bested the great wines of Bordeaux, and it quickly became the definitive text on the subject.  With his new book, Taber has once again brought clarity to a major controversy in the wine world. Another Important Vote

Come Monday, October 27, members of the Brunello Consortium will vote whether or not to change the appellation regulations that have governed Brunello wines for years.  Jeremy Parzen of Do Bianchi writes about it here

You can also follow the Brunello debates on VinoWire.com, an excellent “wire service” that provides current news and events from the world of Italian wines, and co-founded and edited by Parzen and wine writer Franco Ziliani.

The Big Red Smackdown

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Wine School of Philadelphia

The Big Red Smackdown at The Wine School

In honor of Vince McMahon and the WWE

Philadelphia, PA. Outgunned perhaps, but not outwitted, The Wine School of Philadelphia’s very own Keith Wallace laid down the gauntlet last week when he challenged Vince McMahon and Chris Jerico to a Sommelier Smackdown challenge. The whole thing started when McMahon issued a cease and desist ordering the school to stop using what [he claims] is his trademark word: “smackdown”.

Wallace has not yet heard from either McMahon or the WWE’s lawyers. Nonetheless, he’s organized The Big Red Smackdown to take place Saturday, November 28, 6:00 – 8:00 PM, at The Wine School of Philadelphia.

The LA Times, Wine Business News, the Inquirer, all ran with this story,” says Wallace. “But imagine my surprise when no less than a dozen pro wrestling online news sources picked up the story, a number of them making it the story of the day.”

And I always imagined these big lugs knocking back cans upon cans of light beer.”

So, in honor of these (presumed) wine-appreciating wrestlers, and because it’ll be darn fun, Wallace organized the Big Red Smackdown. This particular match will feature reds coming from the school’s top instructors’ cellars.

That’s right, Keith Wallace, Brian Freedman, Frank Cipparone, and Collin Flatt, will be pouring and arguing the merits of their favorite reds. And the first folks to snatch up these tickets are in for one delicious and rumbling good time.

Eric Arnold’s First Big Crush

Eric Arnold is in love.

Not simply with wine, or New Zealand wines, or the people who grow and create those wines.  No, Eric is in love with the whole damn mess of it all.

First Big Crush is a book about a man with a lot of passion, not necessarily a lot of sense, and a whole year to give in to his obsession in hot pursuit of experience and a love affair that he will certainly never forget.   (more…)
