Fattoria di Magliano 2009 “Heba” Morellino di Scansano

The Tuscan coast is a hotbed for winemaking, especially for Cabernet Sauvignon. In Scansano, however, the focus is the Sangiovese grape, locally known as Morellino.

Warmer than inland regions like Chianti, Scansano produces rich and ripe wines, and are often more modern in profile. The region is also notable for its excellent quality to value ratio, one of the best in central Italy.

The “Heba” is consistently a very good bottling, although the 2009 does not stand up to pervious vintages. That said, it is still an excellent bottle for the price.

Aromas of fresh leather and mushroom are evident, leading to pretty floral and herbaceous notes. The floral notes meld with soft red fruit flavors on the palate. A great value.

I was lamenting the scarcity of good and inexpensive Italian Sangiovese, and this one shows up a day later to prove me wrong. Nice balance of modern and classical Italian winemaking, with traditional aromatics of oily leather and dark earth, with round fruit and well toned tannins.
