Tobacco Heiress’s Wine Cellar up for Auction

Doris Duke, the “richest little girl in the world”, famously avoided the press by shunning the spotlight and refusing interviews.  No matter, she still made news, and 16 years after her death, she’s making news again. The only child of James Buchanan Duke, Duke inherited $100 million upon her father’s death in 1925.  She became a world traveller, arts patron, dabbled in sports and mysticism; and – during her lifetime – increased her father’s fortune fourfold.

Reuters reports that Duke had one of the largest wine collections in North America.  One wine, in particular, has caught collectors’ attentions.   “Each of the four lots of three bottles of 1929 Chateau d’Yquem, which have a pre-sale estimate of between $15,000 and $24,000, come from the collection of the late U.S. heiress Doris Duke.”  And all of the bottles can be traced back to the acquisition date.  Great news if you can afford it.
